Two reports that Cozzetto will be new OL coach

Both Dawgman.com and RealDawg.com are reporting tonight that Dan Cozzetto, currently the tight ends coach at Arizona State, may soon be named as Washington’s new offensive line coach.
Dawgman.com is further reporting on its message board that Cozzetto will get the title running game coordinator and will be paid $330,000 a year. And he’d probably be getting at least a two-year deal since that’s what every other assistant has gotten, and maybe three years since that’s what the other coordinators have gotten.
An Arizona source also said that it appears as if Cozzetto is leaving ASU and that he is lured by the salary as well as the chance to again coach an offensive line. (The Arizona Republic is also now reporting that Cozzetto could be headed here, as well).
And if the name sounds familiar, it should, as he was offensive line coach for the Huskies in 2003, hired by Rick Neuheisel to beef up the team’s running game after an anemic 2002 season in that department. Neuheisel was then fired that summer and Cozzetto ended up working for Keith Gilbertson. He left after the 2003 season to rejoin his longtime mentor Dennis Erickson with the San Francisco 49ers. He then coached with Erickson at Idaho in 2006 and followed him to ASU.
Cozzetto has also with Erickson at Oregon State and he also worked under Gilbertson at Idaho and Bruce Snyder at Cal.
So far, there is no official confirmation of this from either UW or ASU, or from Steve Sarkisian’s Twitter site. The school, however, had said that an official announcement of the final position could come soon when it sent out a release earlier today on the hiring of Jimmie Dougherty as new WR coach.
Here is Cozzetto’s bio from the ASU web site. Here, also, is a feature I wrote on Cozzetto in 2003.
Assuming this is true, this would compete UW’s coaching staff as Cozzetto would fill the spot vacated earlier this week when Jim Michalczik left for the Raiders. If the Dawgman.com report is true then it sounds as if it’s possible UW will not have an offensive coordinator in name as Sarkisian has said he will call the plays.
