Husky Stadium bill to get hearing tomorrow

The Washington State Senate Ways & Means Committee will hold a public hearing tomorrow on a bill that would fund a renovation of Husky Stadium. The hearing is set for 1:30 p.m.
SB 6116 specifically would let King County have oversight of a tax that could be used to fund a number of public projects, including Husky Stadium. Here’s the bill.
“That’s the one we support,” said UW athletic director Scott Woodward today. “That is definitely one that we are tracking.”
UW is hoping for $150 million from those taxes to fund a total $300 million renovation of Husky Stadium. Without the tax money, Woodard says the renovation cannot begin and the school would have to start over from scratch with a plan for a remodel. He has said in the past that “there is no Plan B.”
Despite economic problems that have put a particular strain on the state budget this year, Woodward says UW officials remain hopeful the bill will be approved. “But you never really know on these things,” he said. “You just don’t. It’s like trying to guess what the weather is going to be like tomorrow. It’s hard to tell.
“But we like our chances and I think we’ve made some very solid arguments about it being a one-to-one match and being a big boon to the economy with a lot of union construction jobs in the middle of Seattle. That’s our best selling point.”
