Huskies will face own financial issues

The controversy over the proposed move of the Apple Cup to Qwest Field highlighted some of the financial challenges confronting UW’s rival, Washington State University.
But that doesn’t mean the Huskies don’t have some of their own issues.
UW athletic director Scott Woodward said yesterday that cutbacks of all kinds will be considered in the department as it figures out how to make ends meet in the next year — the department runs on a typical July 1-June 30 fiscal year.
Those cutbacks could include layoffs, he said, and while it’s unlikely that any sports would be dropped, Woodward said that “everything is on the table. We haven’t made any final decisions yet and we’re going over them daily. We’re looking at it all right now.”
Like all businesses everywhere, the UW athletic department is faced with challenges of declining revenue with the economy having obviously stumbled in the last year. Upper campus is also facing a cutback in the money it will get from the state which will force all departments on campus to tighten the belts a bit.
Whatever the Huskies decide will be known soon with the new fiscal year approaching.
“Hopefully we should know something in the coming weeks, not months,” he said. “We have to get stuff ready in the next couple of weeks.”
