Thursday morning notes — another new Husky?

Depending on who you believe, the Huskies either have a future kicker in the fold, or our about to get one.
Rivals.com reports that kicker Alejandro Maldonado of Colton, Calif. has committed to UW (though listing him as a soft verbal) while Scout.com reports that he hasn’t talked to any Husky coaches about it yet but may do so today.
He’s quoted by Scout.com as saying that he’s “really interested in Washington” but that he also wants to “open up my options.” Scout.com lists him as a soft verbal, as well. So sounds like he’s heavily leaning toward becoming a Husky but is better written in pencil rather than pen on the commitment list for now.
This won’t impact UW’s kicking situation for the 2009 season as Maldonado is a Class of 2010 guy. But it does indicate the UW coaching staff is going to be serious about trying to settle the kicking issue. UW could have three kickers on scholarship for the 2010 season — PK Erik Folk, P Will Mahan and Maldonado. Both sites list UW as Maldonado’s only offer.
— The UW players are concluding their annual “Blitz the Sound” visits of area schools today. Here’s a report from CoachSark.com. This was something started by Tyrone Willingham that Steve Sarkisian is obviously carrying over — likely one of the few. Here’s a story I wrote about it last year.
— Times columnist Jerry Brewer has this take on the troubles at USC. The LA Daily News quotes Louis Johnson’s attorney as saying that USC basketball is likely to get sanctioned. And another interesting interview of the Yahoo.com reporter writing the stories from the Orange County Register.
All for now.
