Maldonado’s coach says kicker is wide open

Thanks to a long-time reader of the blog for passing along a note on Colton High School kicker Alejandro Maldonado, who had been listed as giving at least a soft verbal to UW.
This item Thursday in the Riverside Press-Enterprise’s high school blog quotes Maldonado’s coach, Harold Strauss, as saying the kicker is still wide open and that the stories of his commitment to UW were the result of a “misunderstanding” between the kicker and UW coaches.
If you remember, the Scout.com story quoted Maldonado as saying that “my coach was telling me that a verbal commitment means I’m interested in the school.” So it sounds as if Maldonado might have been a little unsure about the process and maybe that’s where the misunderstanding arose.
The Press-Enterprise item says Maldonado is still open to UW but will attend a camp at USC and also has interest from Arizona, Arizona State and Nebraska.
OREGON QB TRANSFERRING — Also, if you didn’t see it this morning, it’s being reported that Oregon QB Justin Roper is transferring. He figured to be the backup heading into the season to starter Jeremiah Masoli.
