Heaps holding press conference at Iggy’s in Salt Lake City

Skyline’s Jake Heaps will hold a press conference today at 1 p.m. at Iggy’s Sports Grill in Salt Lake City to announce he is attending BYU — and if anything brings to mind a school like BYU it’s a place called Iggy’s.
The announcement of the time and place came in a press release sent to the Times at 1:03 a.m. — purposely after all of our deadlines, which makes you wonder why they bothered to send out a release yesterday afternoon saying a decision had been made and the announcement of the time and place was to come. All that did was set off the inevitable frenzy of speculation without giving us any of the hard facts (time and place) that usually come with such press releases — or maybe that was the point. Or maybe Iggy just drove that hard of a deal that negotiations couldn’t be settled until 1:02 a.m. — maybe he had to postpone an Osmond autograph signing or something to make room for Heaps.
Anyway, the release also states that there will be “two additional announcements” and quotes Heaps as saying only to “expect the unexpected” in regards to the other two announcements. So maybe that means he’s going to announce he’s committing, instead, to the BYU golf team and that from now on he’d like to be known as Lex Luther Heaps. That would be unexpected.
More likely is the mundane possibility that two other players are going to commit alongside Heaps, with speculation that one of them could be his Skyline teammate, OL Jase Butorac, whose only known D-I offer is from BYU.
By the way, for those who asked, this is indeed a far cry from how Jake Locker did all this. Locker simply made his decision on a Sunday afternoon — I remember because I was covering the last day of the hydro race in the Tri-Cities — told the coaches of the involved schools, then took a few calls from the media to talk about it all. He couldn’t have done it more low-key if he had tried.
POTOA’E OFFERED BY USC — Lakes High coach Dave Miller confirmed via e-mail this morning that lineman Sione Potoa’e was indeed offered by USC yesterday. Potoa’e committed to UW on Feb. 11, the first commit for the Class of 2010. But with his stock rising, this could be one where the fight has just begun.
BIGGINS ON HEAPS — Also, here is the take from ESPN recruiting analyst Greg Biggins on Heaps’ decision.
