Is Jake Locker really better than Tim Tebow? That, and more, in this sun-drenched edition of the links. …
— But first, a good entry from ESPN’s Ted Miller with a breakdown of the athletic department budgets in the Pac-10 for the 2007-08 academic year, courtesy of the Orlando Sentinel. UW ranked fifth with a budget of $60.7 million behind Stanford ($76.6), USC (76.4), UCLA ($66.1), and Cal ($63.9).
— A writer for The Bleacher Report tries to make a case that Locker is indeed better than Tebow.
— Insightful breakdown from Phil Steele on the combined returning career starts for every team in college football. UW ranks 14th overall with 327 but is seventh on defense with 189 — one big reason to think there could be some significant improvement on that side of the ball. Each of those totals ranks second in the Pac-10 behind Stanford, which is third overall and fourth on defense. (And you see defending champ Florida at sixth overall, one big reason everyone is picking the Gators to repeat). Steele also has this page on the Huskies with lots of good info — including the results and point spread of every game for the past 20 years.
— A blogger for The Sporting News, meanwhile, expects LSU to rout UW, saying he thinks the Tigers’ third-team will be in the game by the third quarter.(Although I have to say I love anonymous people who go out on the limb with outlandish predictions — so much risk!!!).
— The Rose Bowl might have to accept non-BCS teams according to a minor modification in the bowl agreements that was apparently done a few years ago but not revealed until this week.
— Several stories out there today saying ex-Husky Reggie Williams may be on the list of WRs being considered by the Baltimore Ravens to fill depth problems at that position.
— Interesting story from The New York Times’ quad blog on how the coaches top 25 poll has safety nets in place to prevent the kind of voting mishap that ensared Steve Spurrier last week.
All for now.
