Spotlight on Locker

I mentioned last week that I interviewed Jake Locker for a half-hour or so one day.
The result is this story, which will also appear in print version in the Sunday edition of the Times. The story is timed to kick off the beginning of UW’s fall football camp Monday.
I also saw it as a good opportunity to put to bed some of the issues of last season before getting on with this year, such as his recovery from a thumb injury that ended his season after the fourth game and his thoughts on what went wrong with the previous coaching regime.
As I mentioned last week, one interesting thing Locker said I hadn’t heard before is that he felt like his body never really felt right last season. He acknowledged that he might have overworked his body a little bit last summer by trying to play baseball, hold a regular job and maintain off-season workout and conditioning commitments with the football team. Then he suffered a hamstring injury early in camp that lingered a while — and then he broke his thumb in the fourth game. So it was pretty much just a lost season. That said, I detail in the story why some of what he did last season gives reason for hope for this year — such as, that he threw 93 passes last year without an interception.
Anytime you do a lengthy interview, lots of stuff inevitably gets left out of the story.
A couple of non-football things we discussed included his girlfriend, Lauren Greer, an outfielder for the UW softball team. The relationship was essentially “outed” during ESPN’s telecast of the College World Series, which Locker attended as the Huskies won the title. Locker said the two have actually been dating for about a year and that their initial date was set up by a couple of Greer’s teammates, including All-American pitcher Danielle Lawrie.
Another was his tattoo, the presence of which may surprise some people, considering his clean-cut image, though when you hear what it is it makes sense. Locker has had a tattoo that includes a verse from the bible — Philippians 4:13 — since his senior year of high school. Locker said he sometimes recites the verse to himself as he walks to the line of scrimmage prior to a play. “It gives myself some personal confidence and just lets you know that you always have someone on your side,” he said.
