Saturday’s O’Dea connection

Or maybe it should be “collision,” the word Johri Fogerson used to describe what it’s like to get hit by USC safety Taylor Mays.
Fogerson knows well, having been a teammate of Mays’ for two years at O’Dea High, where he was groomed to be one of Mays’ replacements in the defensive backfield.
“He took me under his wing in high school and really showed me how to work hard,” said Fogerson. “His hard work speaks for itself. I’m trying to get to where he is.”
Fogerson will be one of six O’Dea High grads on the field for Saturday’s game. Four play for the Huskies — Fogerson, Quinton Richardson and walk-on LB Fred Wiggs, TE Ben Hayes and guard Daniel Kanczugowski.
I talked to Mays before practice today and wrote this story, which also includes a couple of other items, as well. Much of the story is an update on Mays’ health, a key question heading into the game. Mays indicated he’ll probably play even if he doesn’t practice all week.
Of all the O’Dea grads on the field Saturday, Mays and Fogerson are the only two likely to run into each other, thanks to the recent shift of Fogerson back to offense.
Fogerson said the two often joked about what might happen if they ended up on opposite sides of the same game.
“He always said if I was on offense he would bomb me,” Fogerson said. “So we are going to find out.”
Fogerson, though, said he actually has some experience in that department. He was two years behind Mays at O’Dea but said he was brought up being groomed to fill Mays’ place someday. He said during his sophomore year, when Mays was a senior, the two would work together on the days the team did defensive hit drills. “Him and Brandon Jones (now a cornerback at Washington State) were the two people I hit every practice,” Fogerson said.
And what’s it like being hit by the 6-3, 235-pound Mays, who could be one of the top players selected in the next NFL Draft?
“It’s a collision,” Fogerson said. “Oh yeah, definitely. He’s big, he’s fast. You put those two together with the strength that he has, that’s a disaster right there.”
IN OTHER NEWS. …
— The official ticket sold count as of this afternoon was 58,900 (which isn’t less than the 59,000 I gave yesterday, just a more exact count).
— Forgot to mention this earlier, but the Huskies were preparing to face both of USC’s QBs in practice today with Keith Price wearing the No. 7 jersey of Matt Barkley, and Taylor Bean the No. 15 of Aaron Corp.
— Richardson is also off-limits to the media this week.
