Carroll insists no QB decision made yet

I’m back from USC’s walk-through at Husky Stadium where I had figured we would all hear Pete Carroll announce that Aaron Corp will be the starting quarterback tomorrow for the Trojans.
USC is one of the few schools that still lets the media attend these things and I decided I’d go just to see one — especially since I figure this is how Steve Sarkisian’s must look, as well — and that I might have a little news to pass along.
Instead, the wily old coach insisted that no decision had yet been made. He said Matt Barkley participated in a practice at USC this morning and in this walk-through “and threw the ball well.”
Well enough, he insisted to increasingly skeptical reporters, that Barkley could play tomnorrow.
Barkley wants to play, he said, adding that “we’ll see how he feels in the morning.” He said the same about Taylor Mays, who is nursing a knee injury, saying that he would also see how Mays “feels in the morning” before making a decision. “They both want to play,” Carroll said.
He said he didn’t mind setting the precedent of not naming a starter until gameday and insisted that “you’re going to find out when we take the field.”
But asked by a reporter if that meant neither Corp nor Barkley would know until tomorrow who would start, Carroll said that that’s not what he was saying, indicating the starter would know tonight.
Or, more likely, the starter already knows and Carroll just isn’t saying. All signs point to Corp starting and Carroll admitted that “right now, that’s what you guys should be thinking” given that Corp took all the snaps in practice this week.
But after a couple of minutes of sparring on the question, Carroll grew weary of it, saying, “there’s got to be a better topic” then shaking his head and walking away.
Before departing, he had also said that Joe McKnight, battling a flu bug, is close to fully recovered and will play. And he also said RB Staffon Johnson has had a flu bug but also will play.
It all smacks of a little gamesmanship as Carroll prepares for his first meeting with his protege. Whatever. I’d make Corp not starting a much bigger upset than UW winning.
