Pac-10 picks, week four

Finally, a Pac-10 weekend with no filler — nothing but conference games and one legit non-conference contest.
Not that I couldn’t use some breathers. A .500 week against the spread has me still reeling in that department, largely because both Oregon and WSU won when I didn’t expect them to. Not figuring that to happen again this week.
WASHINGTON STATE AT USC (Trojans by 45) — Wow that’s a lot of points. Pretty sure the most in the history of the conference. But Matt Barkley is back, so apparently is Taylor Mays, and the Trojans will be spoiling for a fight after what happened in Seattle last week. And the Cougars have had another tough week with some injuries. We’ll give the points. USC 55, WSU 7.
CAL AT OREGON (Bears by 5.5) — So who would have figured at any point in the season that the Ducks would be last in the Pac-10 in total offense, which they are right now at 273.3 per game? Also last at 4.7 per play. Cal is first at 488.7 and 7.4. This line actually seems a bit too low, the Autzen mystique maybe at work. The Ducks did get a salty win last week against Utah, no question, and Oregon’s defense has done yeoman’s work, especially considering it’s on the field all the time — Ducks are last in the Pac-10 in time of possession at 22:33. Cal should pull away late. CAL 31, OREGON 21.
ARIZONA AT OREGON STATE (Beavers by 2.5) — Two teams getting hard to read by the game, each coming off tough losses last week. Arizona is making a QB change to Nick Foles and a conference game on the road is never really the ideal situation for that. So that alone has me giving the edge to the Beavers. OREGON STATE 27, ARIZONA 20.
ARIZONA STATE AT GEORGIA (Bulldogs by 11.5) — This is where we really begin to find out whether ASU is any good. My theory? ASU’s defense really is pretty good but the offense is just so-so and won’t be able to keep up. GEORGIA 28, ASU 14.
LAST WEEK — 5-4 straight up, 4-4-1 against the spread.
YEAR TO DATE — 19-8 straight up, 9-13-2 against the spread.
And as always, the UW-Stanford pick a little later.
