My Top 25

Here’s my Top 25 for this week:
1, Florida
2, Texas
3, Alabama
4, LSU
5, Oklahoma
6, Boise State
7, USC
8, Virginia Tech
9, Ohio State
10, Iowa
11, Houston
12, Cincinnati
13, Penn State
14, TCU
15, Georgia Tech
16, Miami
17, BYU
18, Ole Miss
19, Oklahoma State
20, Oregon
21, Georgia
22, Kansas
23, Missouri
24, Michigan
25, Cal
And if you want to argue with me that there’s no way LSU is the fourth best team in the country, I’m all ears. But who should be there? This was as hard a ballot as I’ve ever had to fill out after the top three trying to order a lot of teams that frankly all look pretty similar.
Would Boise State be favored if it played USC today? Almost assuredly not. In fact, I bet the Broncos would be a touchdown or more underdog. But what’s USC done that Boise State hasn’t considering BSU’s win over Oregon looks better every day?
Same could be asked of Oklahoma, which I do have ranked ahead of Boise State. But given the tenuous resumes of so many teams, there has to be some projecting here, in my view. And I just feel like when all its pieces are in place, Oklahoma is a cut above some of those other teams.
As for my Pac-10 teams, I still think USC will prove to be the best team in the conference and it does have the win over Ohio State and it does look better when Matt Barkley, who is now back, is the quarterback. And I also feel like the Pac-10 is good enough that its best team deserves to be ranked pretty high. So I moved the Trojans up a few spots this week.
Oregon has to be there after the way it pounded Cal yesterday and winning three in a row. And I decided to keep the Bears there in a close call over Stanford and Arizona State — I was going to have a third Pac-10 team because I think the conference deserves it so it was just a matter of which one. And tomorrow, I might think it’s Stanford or ASU. But I was willing to consider a 19-spot drop a significant penalty for the Bears and figure they’ll make the decision a lot easier for all of us next week when they play USC.
