Rating the Pac

Time for the weekly exercise in futility that is trying to rank the Pac-10. …
, USC — Look like the best team in the conference when Matt Barkley is playing, if not quite as good as the last few years. Get another test — we think — this week at Cal.
, Oregon — Dizzying for weeks for the Ducks, who have gone up, down and now back up — even if few are still sure if they are really very good. But should have no problem continuing the move on up this week with WSU coming to town.
, Arizona — Good weekend as the Wildcats got a nice win at Oregon State while the loss at Iowa got a lot better looking. Arizona and USC are the only two conference teams each ranked among the top four in both total offense and total defense. And looks like the QB change may stick a while. Off this week.
, Stanford — The bad half at Wake Forest is looking more and more like an aberration. If the Cardinal keep playing like that on offense, no reason it won’t win 7-8 games this season. Interesting test this week with UCLA coming to town.
, Cal — Bears really got exposed at Oregon, and they maybe should try giving the ball more to that Best guy. With USC now coming to town, an 0-2 conference start could kill Cal’s Rose Bowl hopes before the season hits the halfway point.
, UCLA — Off last week, and could be in a tough spot this week trying to win at Stanford with Kevin Craft.
, Arizona State — Close loss at Georgia gave some validation to the dominant stats of the first two games. Defense in particular looks like the real deal. Gets Oregon State at home to begin a Pac-10 slate in which the Devils figure to be favored in each of the first three — at WSU and home to UW then follow.
, Washington — Too far a drop for the Huskies? Well, unfortunately Saturday brought back a few too many flashbacks of 2008, particularly being pushed around on both lines. Huskies need to fix that fast .
, Oregon State — Maybe this is the year when the Beavers are finally overrated instead of overlooked. Or maybe they just lost a good game to a good team on Saturday. Next three loom huge — at ASU, Stanford at home, at USC.
, Washington State — Cougs showing some signs of life and at least will be interesting as they turn over the reins to heralded QB recruit Jeff Tuel. But Autzen Stadium not the best place to get a first start.
