If Steve Sarkisian really wants it to be cold this weekend, feels like he’s getting his wish. …
— For my story for today’s paper, I wrote about long snapper Danny Morovick as a way to spotlight the senior class. A list of all the seniors accompanies the story. I thought Morovick interesting to spotlight because he’s the first player UW has ever given a scholarship to solely to be a long snapper. As noted in the story, there were a few rocky moments early. But since the first game or two of the 2007 season he’s been just about flawless — don’t remember having any need to write about bad snaps the last few years.
One thing Morovick told me that didn’t get in the story is that he actually weighs only about 200 pounds right now, which is pretty small for a long snapper. He’s listed at 217 but said he dropped a lot of “bad weight” due to the team’s new conditioning regiment as well as his own initiative to eat better. But he’s obviously handled the job just fine this year at that weight — the one punt blocked this season against Oregon was a protection issue that had nothing to do with the snap.
— Here’s one Nick Daschel opinion UW fans will probably like — he thinks Jake Locker should return for one more season.
— Here’s the San Francisco Chronicle wrapup of Cal news and the Jahvid Best situation — sounds as if his Cal career may be over on top of not being able to play Saturday.
— The San Jose Mercury News looks at how Cal turned its season around after the two big losses to Oregon and USC.
— And lots more Cal news here on Bear Talk blog with Jonathan Okanes.
Phil Steele sees a 34-21 Cal win.
— Here’s the ESPN preview of the game including an ominous weather forecast.
— CBSSports.com has a similar preview.
All for now.
