Sunday links — USC hoops imposes major penalties on itself

The big news in the Pac-10 this morning is that USC has self-imposed major sanctions on itself for violations in the men’s basketball program, including a post-season ban this year — a pretty significant penalty for a team that suddenly looks like it might be among the best two or three in the conference.
Here are details from the USC football site that includes the note that the penalties “do not affect any other program.” Here are more details from the LA Times.
An obvious question is if this will have any impact on the investigation into allegations regarding the football program. Again, the USC release states these penalties are just for men’s basketball. The investigation into football is said to be ongoing. I know few who read this board regularly have any sympathy for USC, but this is definitely more than a handslap. (And it will be interesting to see how it works now logistically with the Pac-10 basketball tournament with USC pulling itself out of that — it pretty much has to if it is not playing in any post-season since the winner gets the conference’s automatic bid. But a nine-team tournament will cause some restructuring).
I would also note that vacating all the wins for the 2007-08 men’s basketball season means, I guess, that UW now has a winning record that year. Washington went 16-17 that season, losing twice to USC. If UW now considers those as wins, as schools usually do when the opponent forfeits, Washington would be 18-15 that season and 9-9 in Pac-10 play.
IN OTHER NEWS. …
— Here’s another wrapup of the Under Armour game that includes a mention of Nick Montana.
— Three future Huskies were named to the LA Times’ All-Area Team today, though Montana was not one of them. Instead, the three named to the team are his Oaks Christian teammate Erik Kohler, RB Deontae Cooper, and DE Brent Williams, who may be one of the more underrated members of UW’s Class of 2010.
— I haven’t been able to find much on the Offense-Defense game. But here’s one story noting that Darius Waters got an interception.
Bud Withers of our staff wrote this today wrapping up the Pac-10’s bowl season.
Ken Goe of The Oregonian says too much can be made of judging conferences by their bowl performances and also includes lots of Pac-10-related links.
All for now.
