National title game on tap, and Gilby finds a job

Though more importantly, tonight’s Alabama-Texas game serves as the conclusion to the First Annual Husky Football Blog Bowl Extravaganza.
Tonight’s game counts for six points in the pool (run through the game being held by The Seattle Times) and with 12 people within six points of the lead, I’m assuming all still have something of a chance.
Sittingdaw (I’m assuming that was Sittingdawg and he ran out of letters) is the leader with 43 points, just one off the points high for all Times entries, and two off the national leader. So at least someone connected with this blog seems to know what they are doing. Still, I notice he/she/it only got 23 of 33 games correct, meaning this has been a hard one for everyone with all of the strange results.
I’ll also come up with some sort of prize for the winner of our group, though the real prize is simply the acknowledgment of a job well done (that’s what they always tell me when I ask for a raise, anyway, so thought I’d try it on you guys, as well).
I’m strangely ambivalent about this game. Maybe it’s because it features two such traditional powers, meaning we just get to see Texas another title title to its long list of accomplishments, or Alabama add another title to its long list of accomplishments. Kind of feels like watching Bill Gates vs. Warren Buffett in an episode of “Who Want to be a Millionaire?” No real warm-and-fuzzy teams here.
And though both are undefeated, you also don’t really get the sense this will be a “game of the ages,” with the winner going down as one of the best teams of all time. Just seems like neither is quite to that level.
But maybe something incredible will happen tonight to truly make this one to remember.
The Wiz of Odds asked a bunch of national experts for their thoughts on the game — and for some reason included me in the mix — and there’s some pretty entertaining stuff in there.
As you can see, I picked Alabama to win 21-17. Just got a feeling that Bama’s defense will prove to be the best unit on the field and will make enough plays to put the Tide over the top. But as you can see by looking at my score in the Bowl Extravaganza — I’ve got a middling 27 points — my bowl predictions have been pretty spot-off.
Anyway, feel free to use this entry as something of a game thread for tonight.
ALSO, former UW head coach Keith Gilbertson has apparently found a new job, headed to Cleveland to work for the Browns and new president Mike Holmgren in the personnel department.
