Del Rio staying, USC may be targeting Mariucci, and a few other notes

A few other quick notes to pass along:
— As updated in the earlier blog, looks like Jack Del Rio is staying in Jacksonville, which means USC’s search has to take yet another turn. Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that Steve Mariucci, who coached Cal in 1996 and then headed to the NFL, could be a candidate. Scott Wolf of the LA Daily News mentions Steve Sarkisian, Lane Kiffin and Herman Edwards. There’s also a report today that Mariucci was on the USC campus on Monday.
— However, if you read the Peter King story linked above, he mentions Sarkisian having already said no. There are conflicting reports on that, that Sarkisian has said no but that USC may come back to him again. Sarkisian has said only that there has been no contact, though he hasn’t said anything since Sunday.
Pete Carroll said at his Seahawks press conference today he expects to name some current and past USC assistants to his new staff. The biggest worry at UW may be about CB coach Demetrice Martin, a grad assistant at USC under Carroll for two years. Martin is UW’s lowest-paid assistant at $100,000 on a two-year guaranteed deal. Nick Holt is also a possibility, having been the DC under Carroll for three years, though he has a three-year deal at UW paying him $2.1 million if he stays the entire time, and there have been rumors of other DCs on Carroll’s list, such as DeWayne Walker.
— The other staffers Sarkisian brought with him from USC include strength and conditioning coach Ivan Lewis, who could also be a target of Carroll’s as it is expected that the Seahawks will start over in that department, as well. Lewis worked in the NFL for a couple of years with the Chargers.
— Carroll said at his press conference he hoped to have a strong relationship with Sarkisian now that both are working in the same city (if I find the exact quote I will pass it along later). But it will obviously be interesting if oneday we see Carroll hanging out at a UW practice.
— ESPN’s Ted Miller writes former Oregon coach Mike Bellotti recently had double knee replacement surgery and that could take him out of the running for any coaching jobs.
All for now.
