Running back Griffin leaves team

UW reserve running back Willie Griffin, who would have been a junior next season, has left the team, the school said tonight, confirming an earlier report from RealDawg.com
Griffin’s depature isn’t much of a surprise as he spent most of last season as the fifth of five tailbacks on the roster, younger players such as Chris Polk and Demitrius Bronson moving ahead of him on the depth chart.
Griffin, a native of Oakland, had just three carries for 11 yards last season. He saw more significant playing time as a redshirt freshman in 2008 when he had 219 yards on 63 carries, including 112 on 26 in the Apple Cup at Washington State. He’s likely leaving for more playing time, though no specific reason was given.
He is the fourth member of the 2009 team to depart since the end of the season, theothers being backup QB Ronnie Fouch (transferring to Indiana State), LB Kurt Mangum (Howard) and WR Vince Taylor.
Despite Griffin’s depature the Huskies will still have a crowded backfield. The top four tailbacks from last season — Polk, Bronson, Johri Fogerson and Curtis Shaw — are all set to return. UW also has added true freshman Deontae Cooper, who has already enrolled in school and will be available for spring practice, and have commitments from Jesse Callier, Melvin Davis and Chris Young (though Young may also end up on defense).
