Angels GM says Locker will play baseball this season

We reported in this space last week that Jake Locker spent three days earlier this month working out with the Angels at their minor league camp.
The Orange County Register took the story a little further today getting some comments from Angels general manager Tony Reagins, who says that he expects Locker to play for one of the Angels’ minor league teams this season.
Obviously, such news means only so much to UW now as there is no longer the worry over whether he might up and play baseball instead of finishing his college career. And Locker has said throughout that any baseball playing he would do would not interfere with any football commitments. So I’m assuming if he were to play baseball this summer, it might be for just a few weeks or so, kind of like he did two summers ago for the Bellingham Bells.
Reagins says there are some specific commitments in the contract Locker signed last August and that playing for an Angels minor league team this summer is among those. Both sides, however, have always been a little vague about exactly what commitments there are, and the Angels didn’t publicize that Locker was at their camp earlier this month — and sounds as if Locker wanted it kept pretty low-key, as well.
Locker signed the contract with the Angels last August before he had a breakout season as a college QB for the Huskies and emerged as an almost-certain first-round NFL Draft pick.
