Butler taken by Chargers in third round, Te’o-Nesheim to Eagles

Former UW linebacker Donald Butler (pictured right) was selected in the third round of the NFL Draft tonight by the San Diego Chargers. He was the No. 79 pick overall.
UPDATE — And just as I posted this, Daniel Te’o-Nesheim was taken by the Eagles in the third round at No. 86.
They are the first UW players selected since Isaiah Stanback (Dallas) and Dashon Goldson (49ers) went in the the fourth round in 2007. He is the highest-selected Husky since Khalif Barnes was taken in the second round in 2005 by Jacksonville.
Here’s an Associated Press story out of San Diego that details how the Chargers moved up to take Butler and how he may fit into the team’s plans.
And here’s a live analysis that notes that Butler will likely add immediate depth for SD’s 3-4 defense.
This means Butler will be back in Seattle on Sept. 26 when the Chargers are scheduled to play at Qwest Field against the Seahawks.
And here’s the same live analysis on the pick of Te’o-Nesheim.
Here’s a quick reaction of the DTN pick from an Eagles writer who notes that it seemed a little odd given that they took a defensive end in the first round. And here’s a brief overview from the AP.
