UW’s history vs. Utah

When Colorado was admitted to the Pac-10 last week, it wasn’t hard to come up with some memorable football games between the Huskies and Buffs that will at least allow fans to feel some sense of rivalry when the two start meeting again regularly.
Utah, though, is a different story.
Washington has rarely played Utah through the years, which actually seems a little strange given the geographic proximity, as the two have met just six times and only once since 1959 (UW has played Utah’s rival, BYU, only seven times, but all since 1985, and will play the Cougars again this season).
The only meeting between the two since 1959 came in 1979 when a No. 14-ranked UW team beat the visiting Utes 41-7.
Previous to that were a 7-6 UW win in 1931, 14-7 in 1949, 21-14 in 1953, 7-6 in 1954 and 51-6 in 1959. All but the 1953 game were in Seattle.
A quick perusal of the media guide didn’t reveal much interesting in the way or records of standout performances in any of those games.
Maybe the most interesting football connection between the two schools is QB Lee Grosscup, who spent a year at UW before leaving in 1956 (apparently because he didn’t like then-coach John Cherberg) and transferring to Utah, where he became a first-round pick and later an announcer.
