Wednesday a.m. links — More on realignment, and Locker named to Unitas watch list

First this morning is this story out of Arizona in which Wildcats’ AD Greg Byrne was pretty open in talking about some of the new Pac-10 realignment possibilities.
He says he’s seen six different “realignment proposals.” He also says Pac-10 ADs are expected to hold a conference call today to discuss realignment. However, it is not expected that any decision will be made until at least July 30, when the ADs meet in person following the conference’s media day in Pasadena. More likely, the decision won’t be made until a little while after that.
In reading the story, you see that Byrne is confident Arizona will remain tied to the southern California schools. However, that’s something most of the other schools want as well, including UW. That will be the major issue to sort out.
Byrne also reiterates what a lot of others have said, that it will be a surprise if the Pac-10 doesn’t continue to play nine conference games (making it easier to keep some of those longtime rivalries alive).
— Here’s another version of that story, plus a picture of the new Pac-10 logo (which we first showed on here about two months ago).
IN OTHER NEWS. …
Jake Locker is among those named to the watch list for the Johnny Unitas Award.
— Here’s more detail on the news that Josh Shirley and the other two UCLA players who ran into trouble last month are free to go wherever they chose. Essentially, since they are being denied admittance to UCLA, their letters-of-intent are null, so they are again recruitable athletes.
— Another good preview of BYU from the College Football Zealots a site that earlier had this preview of the Huskies.
— Some thoughts on the Oregon schools as the season nears.
— The Orlando Sentinel college football blog has some links around the sport, including the news on the Rodgers’ brothers being involved in a minor car accident.
— Here’s a good source of Syracuse information, if you’re looking for one. It tends to be dominated by basketball news, which only makes sense, but there’s a little football in there.
All for now.
