Shugert to Portland State

Scratch one more scholarship player off the UW roster as little-used offensive lineman Scott Shugert has transferred to Portland State.
In fact, he is already listed on the Portland State roster. He will be a junior there this season and immediately eligible.
Shugert, of Oregon City, Ore., played in just one game at UW, against Idaho last season, and was buried deep on the depth chart at guard and didn’t appear likely to play much this season, especially with a highly-regarded group of seven freshmen OLs arriving this year.
Shugert was a member of the Class of 2007 (which has already lost 12 of the 27 players who originally signed, including two JC transfers, though that’s a list for another day).
If my addition is correct, the losses of Shugert and Alvin Logan in the last week leave UW with 80 scholarship players entering the season, leaving plenty of room for a full class in 2011.
Shugert is the 20th scholarship player to leave the team since UW coach Steve Sarkisian took over in Dec., 2008.
Here’s the list and stated reason:
LB Alvin Logan, injuries.
OL Scott Shugert, playing time.
TE Kavario Middleton, dismissed for disciplinary reasons.
OL Mark Armelin, playing time.
OL Allen Carroll, grades.
RB Brandon Johnson, grades.
RB Terrance Dailey, grades.
DL Tyrone Duncan, playing time.
RB David Freeman, grades.
QB Ronnie Fouch, playing time.
RB Willie Griffin, playing time.
LB Kurt Mangum, playing time.
CB Matt Mosley, playing time.
DL Craig Noble, heart condition.
LB Bradly Roussel, playing time.
OL Matt Sedillo, personal reasons.
RB Curtis Shaw, playing time.
WR Vince Taylor, playing time.
OL Terence Thomas, injury.
RB Brandon Yakaboski, injury.
UPDATE — As a couple of you have noted, I haven’t included Andru Pulu and David Batts on this list, and I obviously should have. Pulu was indefinitely suspended after his arrest on assault and isn’t expected back. Batts was kicked off the team last fall for a disciplinary reason. I overlooked each since my initial list was of players from the previous regime who were no longer on the team. Pulu and Batts were each recruited by Sarkisian. So it’s 22 total players who have departed since Sarkisian took over, 20 who were recruits of Tyrone Willingham’s.
Also, on my comment on being able to take a full class for 2011, I probably should have said “close” to a full close. Obviously, they aren’t completely there yet to having that much room. But I just think enough has happened already and likely will continue to happen that there will be room for UW to get pretty close a full close for 2011.
