A comment on Coaches’ APR

You may have noticed yesterday that the NCAA released new Academic Progress Rates for individual coaches.
I didn’t really get to it on here for two reasons — there was lots of other UW news, and it’s not really applicable to UW coach Steve Sarkisian because he has only been coach of the Huskies for one full season.
The last year accounted for on the coaches’ APR is 2008-09, the year when Tyrone Willingham coached the team in the fall before Sarkisian took over in December.
Sarkisian was assigned a score of 934 for that year, with the notation that the school had multiple coaches that year. A score of 925 is the baseline to avoid penalties, though penalties are not assessed to coaches, only to the schools (as explained in this press release, the NCAA is releasing scores for coaches largely as a way to hold them publicly accountable).
You can view Willingham’s scores here and note that UW was above the national average each full academic year he was coach. The APR began in 2003-04, so no comparisons available to the Rick Neuheisel era, or any other coaches prior to then other than the one full year for Keith Gilbertson, who had a score of 935.
Jon Wilner has a summary of all the Pac-10 scores here and you can see UW basketball has done well of late.
Here’s also a report on how the Oregon schools fared.
