Press conference notes

The first weekly press lunchecon of the season is over here at UW. I’ll have some more complete quotes later. But here are a few highlights:
— UW coach Steve Sarkisian said the only players on the entire roster ruled out due to injury are RB Deontae Cooper and LB Brandon Huppert. Everyone else could play. The most questionable of the rest remains DE Kalani Aldrich, who hasn’t practiced much of late while recovering from off-season knee surgery. Sarkisian said they’ll try to get him on the field early this week and then determined if Aldrich can play. He said WR James Johnson seemed to recover well from Saturday’s practice and should be able to go this week.
Cort Dennison attended the luncheon and said his knee feels a lot better and he will definitely be able to play this week (obviously, in all of these, barring a setback this week in practice).
— Sarkisian affirmed that Gregory Christine has won the starting RG spot, saying his leadership and experience helped give him an edge over Mykenna Ikehara.
— He said Nate Fellner will start at free safety due to his experience, but that freshman Will Shamburger will play a lot, as well — in fact, he said the two could basically rotate series. Also, both will likely be on the field a lot at the same time in the nickel defense.
— He said Everrette Thompson will start at defensive end in part because they want a physical player over there to deal with BYU’s OL. However, he said De’Shon Matthews will also see a lot of action.
— Sarkisian said each of the 12 true frosh on the two-deep could play this week, though he said they’ll be smart about it and won’t put in a guy for just a play. He also said there was a chance that some true frosh not on the depth chart (such as Sione Potoa’e and Josh Shirley) could also play. “Potentially,” he said when asked about those two guys. Sounds like they are still wrestling with the decision on a few guys.
— UW will take 76 players, so just about everyone who could conceivably play will be on the trip.
— Sarkisian said they will prepare for two different styles with BYU QBs Riley Nelson and Jake Heaps. Intriugingly, he said they will prepare for the chance that both QBs could be on the field at the same time.
