Afternoon links and notes — Mahan out this week? UPDATED

UPDATED AT 6:30 P.M. — UW punter Will Mahan is out for the year after suffering a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee in practice Tuesday. Walk-on Kiel Rasp will apparently become the team’s new punter — he’s the only other punter on the roster — though UW coach Steve Sarkisian said there are “other options,” without elaborating.
Sarkisian said he would try to get a redshirt year for Mahan, a JC transfer who is a fourth-year senior this season.
Also, RB Johri Fogerson is out for this week with a hip flexor injury, leaving UW suddenly thin at tailback, with starter Chris Polk backed up by Jesse Callier and Demitrius Bronson, of scholarship players who are listed at that spot.
More later.
ORIGINAL POST — I’m not able to be at practice today, so Bud Withers is filling in and will have some info later.
However, I see that Dave “Softy” Mahler at KJR-AM is reporting that UW punter Will Mahan is “on crutches with a splint on his left leg.”
Obviously sounds like he can’t go this week — we’ll find out for sure after practice.
However, that’s a not insignificant loss for the Huskies as Mahan has been dependable, if somewhat inconsistent last week against BYU. His replacement is walk-on Kiel Rasp of Nathan Hale, who has been with the team off and on since 2007 but has never punted in a game. And remember that successful punting at this level is about more than just a strong leg, but the speed to get it off before the rush
Again, we’ll get more on this situation later.
