Nick Holt quotes

Here are some thoughts from UW defensive coordinator Nick Holt following Saturday’s win over Syracuse:
Opening comments: “I thought other than a couple missed tackles and the fourth quarter touchdown on second and long, I thought our guys did a nice job, I really did. They executed the game plan, did a nice job in coverage, played the run real well. I knew they were going to try to run the ball and for the most part I thought we were really really stingy. We just got some things to clean up. Their long run came on a QB scramble in the first quarter, we missed a tackle and so he gets 28 yards on that and that was their longest run of the game, and then they ran a little draw on third and long and got about 14 yards. Other than that it was pretty good. I’m not happy with the last touchdown, I wish that didn’t happen. I thought that we were going to hold them there, second and 15 I felt real confident that we’d hold them to at least a field goal and we just didn’t make a play in coverage by a couple of guys.”

Comparison between this and last year’s defense: “I think we’re playing at a better level than last year because we know our defense better. Some of our younger guys got to come around and help us out. I think our older, veteran players did a nice job today. I think hopefully by the end of the year, hopefully sooner, I think our defense will be better than last year. It already shown improvement I thought. I mean, you get down 10-0, you go three and out, you get some penalties and you’ve got to go back out there, it’s third down and the guy scores. Some stuff, and field position again is not great, and so it just seems like we always got our backs against the wall early in the game and so we’re just kinda trying to battle.”
On the message to his players at 10-0: “Our guys kind of thought, wait a minute, it’s already 10-0 but we’re kinda doing a good job of beating them up, but the missed tackle on that third down and whatever it was the guy leaving his feet and the guy, he knew it and he felt bad. You just regroup them and you keep playing and you’ll get back in the game. We just didn’t have a chance. We were out there three and out, we have a penalty and you gotta go back out there kinda like last week’s. Then we just settled down and played. ”
On finally getting to the QB: “I thought we would. We did a better job rushing the passer. We missed a couple sacks. The corner ran by the QB on a blitz, Alameda (Ta’amu) missed a sack. There were opportunities to get a couple more sacks, but it was better. And we got some turnovers, the kickoff team did a nice job on a couple things.”
