Interesting stuff from the Ventura County (Calif.) Star tonight reporting on a recruiting visit of Husky coach Steve Sarkisian to Ventura College this afternoon (a quick flight out of town after a 10 a.m. practice at UW).
As the story notes:
Sarkisian flew in Thursday afternoon and attended Ventura College football practice, where he observed and briefly met with Pirates’ quarterback Antavius Sims and linebacker Brendan Daley.
“That’s legit,” said first-year Ventura coach Steve Mooshagian. “He wouldn’t be spending his time if he wasn’t genuinely interested.” Washington recruiting coordinator Johnny Nansen also attended the VC practice.
Washington receiving coach Jimmie Dougherty went further down Telegraph Avenue to St. Bonaventure High, where he checked in on recruits Jalen Jefferson and Cody Kurz. The Huskies offered scholarships to both seniors in the spring.
The coaches were then scheduled to fly to Stockton for Thursday night’s game between Sacremento Grant and Edison High.
Sims has been offered a scholarship by Florida International and is also being recruited by Ole Miss. Daley is also being recruited by Utah. Lattimore is being recruited by Iowa State and Auburn. Kansas State has also shown interest in all three players.
Ventura is 2-1 entering Saturday’s home game against 2-1 Chaffey. Sims leads Southern California in rush attempts (68) and is No. 2 in total offense (336.3 yards per game), No. 3 in rushing (115.3 ypg) and No. 7 in passing (221.0 ypg).
Obviously, it’s interesting that UW has interest in a junior college quarterback. UW needs to get at least one QB in this class with Jake Locker graduating after 2010, leaving just two scholarship QBs — Nick Montana and Keith Price. For those who might think pursuing a JC QB shows a lack of faith in those two, I wouldn’t. Instead, it shows that the coaches know they have to get another scholarship QB or two as no team wants to go into a season with just two scholarship quarterbacks. UW has pursued and didn’t get a couple other QBs such as Brett Hundley (who committed recently to UCLA) and Cody Kessler (USC) and obviously are looking wherever they can.
Here is some video of Sims:
And here is his Scout.com profile. As is evidenced in the video and his stats, Sims is a dual-threat type, similar to Locker and Price.
The Huskies are also interested in QB Adam Pittser of Richmond, Ill. He will take an official visit to UW in two weeks.
