Wednesday morning links — Johnson ready for his return, and more

For my main story today, I wrote about WR James Johnson, who is likely to make his full-fledged return this weekend from a sprained ankle. Johnson played near the end of the Syracuse game and caught one pass, but said that was merely as a way to get him on the field in a non-pressure situation and see how his ankle would react.
He didn’t recover well enough to play against Nebraska as Johnson said there was a risk of re-injury if he tried to come back too soon. But Johnson has been back in the lineup all week in practice and appears getting closer to 100 percent, if not quite there yet. As I detail in the story, his loss seems a little bit of an underrated reason why the passing game hasn’t always looked quite up to pre-season expectations.
IN OTHER NEWS. …
— The LA Times reports that USC fullback Stanley Havili wants to make up for a costly fumble against the Huskies last season while also detailing his close association with Steve Sarkisian. Sarkisian mentioned this week he knew Havili as well as anyone on the USC roster.
— The LA Daily News has the latest retort from Lane Kiffin about Sarkisian’s comment that USC is the deepest team in the Pac-10.
— The Orange County Register reports that Kiffin thinks UW has an edge since its coaches know the Trojan players so well. The OCR also reports on the “mind games” between Kiffin and Sarkisian.
— The OCR also has a good video preview of the game, including two predictions of a tight USC win.
— ESPN.com’s Los Angeles bureau has a USC practice report on its Trojans’ blog.
— ESPN.com’s Pat Forde says you can end the hype about Jake Locker.
— The Sports Network picks USC to win 38-24.
— And here’s the Sports Exchange team report on UW and USC.
— Oregon gave Chip Kelly a new six-year, $20.5 million contract with a hefty buyout clause.
All for now.
