Post-game player quotes

Here are some quotes from UW players and coaches following tonight’s win over USC:
On the last drive: “We were confident. Nobody had their head down. We just went out there and made the plays. We were just having fun ”
On the win: “It’s a big win, our first road win in a while and we knocked off a top-ranked team, opening up Pac-10 play with a victory. It’s big for a lot of reasons.”
On getting called to play: “I knew that we needed to score and coach Sark called up the perfect play and Iz (Chris Izbicki) made a good catch.”
On what Sarkisian told him: “Just settle down. I was a little excited coming back home to play and I knew I just needed to settle down and play.”
On the TD play: “Coach Sark said ‘hey we are going to throw you a touchdown pass’ and I was all for it.”
On what happened on the play: “That was one of my reads. My first read got banged up a little bit and I just carried my eyes to the back of the end zone and he was there.”
On doing it at home: “Sure, I always wanted to play here and play against these guys and I had a lot of fun. It was great.”
On the importance of the win: “It was our first road win in a long time and we definitely needed this road win and it showed we can finish.”
On coming back after the Nebraska game: “We came back the bye week practices and we kept practicing hard and fighting and pushing.”
On USC calling time outs to ice him: “I wasn’t really thinking about it. Before I went out I saw they had three time outs left but once I went out there I didn’t really think about it at all.”
On the winning kick: “I could have hit it better but I felt like I hit it pretty well — it had a lot of height on it. But I could have hit it better, but I hit it well enough to go through.”
On how much confidence he has: “I’m feeling a lot better. My mindset has gotten a lot better from the beginning of last season to now. I’m a lot more confident in my swing and know that if I go out there and kick it I will make it.”
On the defense:
“We missed some tackles, and we should have made a few more plays tonight earlier that maybe would have made a bigger difference. But when it came down to it we made our plays, especially in the fourth quarter.”
On knowing they could play with USC: “We knew that we could coming in here because we had watched a lot of film on them and we knew they weren’t the same team they had been in the past. We knew we had to just do our one job, individually, and everything would be all right.”
On the win: “It’s an awesome feeling and I was really proud of these guys.”
On his performance: “I had 10 other guys around me that make it a lot easier on me. I was really proud of how this football team played today and the positions we were able to put each other in. We trusted each other and believed in each other and played as a unit and the results were there.”
On the last drive: “I told the guys before the game ‘hey man, let’s go out and play like we did the last two games of the year (2009). Let’s have confidence in each other and not be afraid to make a mistake and go out and play worry free. So when we got in the huddle I said ‘I love you guys. We’ve got one more down to continue this drive and give ourselves a chance to win this game.’ And there wasn’t one guy in the huddle that thought we couldn’t do it. I looked at each guy in the eye and saw confidence and that’s why I think we were able to convert.”
On wanting to atone for the Nebraska game: “I was as eager as everybody else. It was a tough outing for us two weeks ago. To come out and start Pac-10 this way means a lot to this football team.”
On it being the biggest win of his career: “I think yeah, to come on the road and our road record being what it’s been the last three years and to come into this stadium and with this football team to win in this fashion is awesome. It’s exciting.”
On quieting criticism from the Nebraska game: “I don’t pay attention to that stuff, It’s not going to make me better or worse. You hear rumblings of it, obviously. I can promise you nobody was more frustrated with how I played than me. I was just excited to go out here and have an opportunity to compete with this football team.”
On what happened when he left the game: “I knew I was coming back in the game. I just got my bell rung. I got a little woozy and fortunately was able to come back.”
On a game like this making him glad he stayed: “Games like this and efforts like this are the reason why I did.”
On winning for Sarkisian at USC: “I think it was a big one for him and we all knew it and felt it. For him and a lot of guys like coach Holt (who have ties to USC) to be able to give them a win in this stadium is awesome.”
On the gameplan having more running in it for him: “It was a good gameplan and we executed it really well. … I thought we did a great job everywhere. Different teams pose different challenges and provide different areas of weakness and we do our best each week to exploit those.”
On the last drive feeling like last year: “Oh yeah, the whole situation.”
