Ranking the Pac

One and 10 remain easy. Other than that, your guess is as good as mine from week to week, but here goes, anyway. …
, Oregon — Ducks’ defense showing some signs of vulnerability, but its offense could shatter the Pac-10 record book. Oregon has this weekend off to prepare for a home game with UCLA a week from Thursday.
, Stanford — Cardinal had a close shave with USC, but ultimately got the win, which can’t be discounted. Stanford has the week off then WSU at home and then at UW.
, Oregon State — Beavers making their annual October rise back up the standings. According to Sagarin, OSU has played the toughest schedule in the country, and that may be paying off now that it gets into a stretch of more winnable games.
, Arizona — The bloom came off the Wildcats a little last week, but UA now has a three-game stretch in which it could recover nicely — at WSU, home to UW, then at UCLA.
, Cal — How’s this for a five-game stretch of points allowed — 3, 7, 52, 10, 7? Cal looked like a real contender in the win over UCLA. But problem the last few years has been consistency, as that points allowed total indicates. That consistency will be tested this week with a game at USC.
, Arizona State — ASU, with just two seniors starting, looks like a team on the rise, especially if the UW game is a sign that it is beginning to curtail its self-desctructive tendencies. ASU has the week off to prepare for a visit to Cal Oct. 23.
, USC — Time to acknowledge that its defense just isn’t very good. But the offense remains explosive and will keep the Trojans in just about every game they play the rest of the way. USC now has three in a row at home — Cal, Oregon and ASU.
, Washington — Yes, UW beat USC so maybe I should have the Huskies and Trojans switched. But the home loss to ASU was obviously troubling and a real momentum killer, and UW now enters a real gauntlet of OSU, Arizona, Stanford and Oregon.
, UCLA — Biggest yo-yo team in the conference. After three straight wins, looked awful against Cal, and now comes news of suspension of as many as six starters for the Oregon game. After that comes visits from Arizona and Oregon State. Bruins could be on life support by the time they make a Thursday night visit to UW on Nov. 18.
, Washington State — Cougars are narrowing the gap a little, especially with an improving passing offense, but it still figures to be an upset to get a win this season. Interesting to see Sagarin has WSU 90th this week, ahead of teams such as Tennessee, (94), South Florida (100, and the highest-ranked team of the four that Syracuse has beaten), Clemson (103) and Boston College (110).
