Kiper says Locker is still a first-round pick, and a few more links

A question I’ve gotten often of late is whether UW’s season is hurting Jake Locker’s draft status any.
Draft guru Mel Kiper, Jr., of ESPN.com was asked that very same question today during a live chat and said that if Locker’s stock has dropped, it hasn’t gone down much.
Said Kiper:

Right now, he’s 7 on the Big Board. I still think he’s an early to mid first round draft grade. His skill level and potential still warrants him being drafted in the 7-15 area. He’s not going to help you as a rookie, very few QBs do. With a ton of talent and upside, he’ll be an intriguing pick.

It’s Kiper, of course, who helped set the hype machine for Locker in motion when he said last spring that it’s “etched in stone” that Locker would be the No. 1 pick in the 2011 draft (we could all make jokes here about that etching having apparently washed away somehow and things like that — give Kiper the benefit of the doubt that it’s the nature of his business that things can fluctuate greatly).
You can read the entire transcript of Kiper’s chat here, which is also interesting for his response to the SI.com story yesterday.
IN OTHER NEWS. …
Ted Miller has lots of good stuff on his blog today, including this listing of early leaders for major Pac-10 season awards — and yes, you obviously wouldn’t have thought six weeks ago that Locker wouldn’t be among the candidates for Offensive Player of the Year. Miller does mention Mason Foster as a possible Defensive POY.
— Miller also has this look at how the Beavers will move on without James Rodgers.
— The Oregonian’s Paul Buker has an entertaining chat with Oregon State’s struggling place kicker Justin Kahut.
— ESPN.com’s Greg Biggins reports in a premium story that highly-touted LB Corey Waller of Long Beach Poly will visit UW this weekend but also just got an offer from USC — which will make Washington’s efforts to land him that much more difficult.
— BetFirms.com, which correctly tabbed ASU to beat UW last week, picks the Huskies to rebound this week and beat Oregon State 38-35.
— The Locksmith, however, says to take Oregon State.
— Lots of good links here from The Oregonian.
It’s a nice, sunny, fall day up here at UW, so I’m heading out to practice in a few minutes. More afterward.
