Pac-10 picks, Week Eight

A brief break from realignment talk — I’ll have a few more thoughts and notes on that in a minute — to get to this week’s picks. Though as always, the UW pick will come later.
UCLA AT OREGON (Ducks by 24): The line has gone up in Oregon’s favor by four points, and makes some sense the way UO’s offense and with UCLA likely to go with Richard Brehaut at QB. Oregon may stumble at some point this year, but this seems an unlikely spot for that to happen. OREGON 45, UCLA 13.
ARIZONA STATE AT CAL (Bears by 3.5): The line has actually gone up a one in Cal’s favor, which seems a little strange based on the last two outings of the two teams. On the other hand, the Bears are usually pretty salty at home — 14-2 since 2007. ASU seems like a team on the rise, and this looms as a real swing game for the Devils to get into a bowl — they need seven wins to qualify. But I think the Bears win a tight one. CAL 27, ASU 21.
WASHINGTON STATE AT STANFORD (Cardinal by 34.5): Despite some improvement on offense (and particularly the passing game) the Cougars’ defense remains dreadful, ranked dead last in the NCAA in yards allowed (493.9) and 119th in rushing (236.0 and 5.8 per carry). That’s bad news against an explosive Stanford team that is coming off a bye. STANFORD 48, WSU 10.
LAST WEEK: Straight up, 3-0; against the spread, 3-0.
SEASON TO DATE: Straight up, 36-10, against the spread, 18-20-1.
