Friday links — Examining Woodward’s Oregon comments, and more

With the Huskies off, the most-talked-about topic of the week here was the comments of UW ahtletic director Scott Woodward about Oregon’s academics.
So the Times’ regular “Truth Needle” feature, which attempts to discern the validity of claims made by political and other public figures, today examined Woodward’s claims. Read the story here.
And with UW off this weekend, there’s not much to find out there other than this story from GoHuskies.com, setting the stage for the bye weekend. As noted in that story, UW will return to practice Saturday night and whether Jake Locker takes part could go a long way toward indicating if he will play Thursday against UCLA. We’ll be out there, so watch this space Saturday night for updates.
IN OTHER NEWS. …
— I get lots of questions about USC’s scholarship situation going forward. Scott Wolf of the LA Daily News did a good job today examining it, though I caution that the note about UW having just 75 scholarship players heading into this season isn’t completely true. UW currently has 83 scholarship players on its roster by my count, including five walk-ons awarded scholarships before the season (Greg Christine, Brandon Huppert, etc.).
— The LA Times has a story on the improvement of QB Richard Brehaut and the Daily News offers a practice report.
— The Daily News also has a UCLA notebook with thoughts on how the Bruins are approaching UW’s QB situation.
Bud Withers has his weekly college football notebook and Pac-10 power rankings and picks.
Jon Wilner also has Pac-10 picks, along with a good look at the conference’s bowl situation, noting Cal could end up as high as the Holiday Bowl (so could UW if the Huskies get to 6-6 as well?) And like Withers, Wilner picks Arizona State to beat Stanford.
— Lots of Pac-10 links from Vince Grippi and Ken Goe.
— Sad news from the Everett Herald on the passing of Manusina Tuiasosopo, the father of former Husky Trenton Tuiasosopo (but not to be confused with the former Seahawk player and the father of Marques Tuiasosopo. They were brothers).
All for now.
