Huskies planning to “black out” UCLA

With the UCLA game now just four days away, the Huskies are beginning to confirm what has been a hard-to-keep secret — that UW will wear black uniforms for the game against the Bruins as part of an overall “black theme” for the night.
UW coach Steve Sarkisian did not talk specifically about the black uniforms but talked about the black theme, which he said will include some “different paint and what not in the end zones.”
He also said T-shirts will be handed out to the student section in a further effort to “black out” the stadium.
Asked how it came about, Sarkisian said during his regular weekly press conference today that: “We are just trying to do something special for our student body to keep them involved and excited about coming to watch us play. We appreciate their support, no doubt, and they (are) a big factor on our game and (we want) to do something unqiue for our fans to get them excited. And also on our front, I think our kids are excited about it and it adds a unique feel to a night game, a Thursday night, something that hasn’t been done here in 80 years now, maybe 90 years, just tyring to do something fresh and fun to keep everybody excited about what we are doing.”
He noted that black has been used by the school previously. “In general when you look at what’s kind of gone on with our University, that black has been incorporated much more in our school colors in a sense, prior before I even got here,” he said. “It’s got a nice feel to it with the colors that we have and it comes across looking sharp.”
UW linebacker Cort Dennison said that players are excited about it.
“It’s something different, something we have never done before,” he said. “It’s going to be something fun for the fans, all wearing black.”
Dennison said that the uniforms include black pants and are “pretty sweet. … I think it’s a great thing for our program. A lot of the players have always talked about changing something up with the uniforms. Last year we kind of did that with the white-on-white and stuff and the white pants, so I think it’s a great thing for our program. It shows we will reach out of the box and are up for something new and it’s going to be great.”
Dennison said he thinks it might fire the players up a bit.
“When you feel good and look good on the field you might play better,” he said. “So we’ll see what happens.”
Sarkisian also said that a decision on whether to clear Jake Locker medically will likely come on Tuesday. He said Locker has rebounded fine from practicing hard the last two days and that strictly in a football sense he is good to go. But he said Locker has not yet been cleared by doctors, with that exam coming on Tuesday.
UPDATE, 3:50 p.m. — KJR-AM’s Mike Gastineau has posted a few pictures of the black end zones.
