Friday links — Huskies set to close out Memorial Stadium

One of the subplots to Saturday’s game at Cal is that it is the last at Memorial Stadium before it undergoes a major renovation.
So I wrote about that for my story for today’s paper, learning along the way that the two teams also played in the final game for the field that preceded Memorial Stadium in Berkeley. Apparently, it’s about a mile or so away from where Memorial Stadium is now.
Memorial Stadium is just three years older than Husky Stadium, which is also set to get a facelift next year, meaning, obviously, UW will close out the two oldest — and two of the most iconic — stadiums in the Pac-10.
The story also discusses the differing financial plans funding the two stadiums. UW AD Scott Woodward said this week UW is up to about $15 million of the $25 million it has stated it has needed by March to begin construction. But he also clarified that there is some wiggle room there, that other funds can be dipped into (such as the money that will come UW’s way via the expansion in coming years) along the way if needed. So he says funding-wise that everything is on track.
IN OTHER NEWS. …
