Bowl game pays off for Sarkisian, other UW coaches

Getting to the Holiday Bowl also means a nice Christmas bonus for UW head coach Steve Sarkisian, who will get $150,000 due to the fact that Huskies made a non-BCS bowl game.
As is common for all college head coaches these days, Sarkisian has written into his contract varying bonuses for different bowl games — from $150,000 to making it to any bowl game (as is the case this year) to $500,000 for winning the BCS title game.
Each of UW’s assistants will also get a bonus for the bowl game. Coordinators Doug Nussmeier, Dan Cozzetto and Nick Holt each get $10,000 while each of the others gets $8,000.
The $150,000 bonus will put Sarkisian over the $2 million mark in earnings for this season, which is also third among all Pac-10 coaches. ESPN.com’s Ted Miller nicely listed the salaries for each coach today, also linking a USA Today project today breaking down the salaries for every FBS coach.
Sarkisian, however, won’t get as much for coaching in the bowl game as his Nebraska counterpart, Bo Pelini, who will receive a $250,000 bonus.
As the USA Today story notes, Sarkisian can make up to $1.5 million per year in bonuses, and many are also for academic performance, as I detailed in a post a few years ago.
And such bowl-game bonus clauses have been standard fare at UW for years. Sarkisian’s predecessor, Tyrone Willingham, could have made $25,000 for making it to any bowl game up to $175,000 for a BCS title, money the school obviously never had to pay.
