Tuesday links — Turning the page

Tuesday means the first serious practice of the week preparing for Cal, a Pac-12 opener that looms critical.

They all do, to be sure, but given the way UW’s schedule breaks, this seems a particularly important game. A 3-1 record will look a head of a lot better heading to Utah than 2-2 — and the Utah game starts a string of four of seven games on the road — and a string of four in seven games in which UW likely won’t be favored (at Utah, at Stanford, Oregon, and at USC).

So the urgency will be great for the Huskies this week.

Monday, though, was inevitably spent reviewing the game that was over the weekend and I recapped what was said in my story for Tuesday’s paper.

The Huskies are again practicing early this week, going at 1 p.m., with school not yet in session and kickoff again this week at 12:30 p.m.

IN OTHER NEWS. …

— CoachSark’s site has pictures of Monday’s practice.

Ted Miller says he was horribly wrong about Washington’s defense, among other things. He also assesses the Heisman hopes of Pac-12 players, including Chris Polk.

— If you want to know which UW players the Nebraska players thought did the most trash talking, a Cornhusker offensive lineman named a few (by number, anyway) when talking to the media Monday. Bo Pelini also had a few more thoughts on the UW game.

— As for UW’s opponent this week, Cal, here’s a story that says it’s special teams need to be more consistent this week.

Jon Wilner, meanwhile, gives Cal a B for last week and says this week’s game could be a shootout.

— Here’s the BearTalk blog with more on Cal.

— And here are Cal’s official game notes this week.

— UW remains a 3-point favorite.

— Here’s one guy picking Cal.

— Lots of links around the conference from Vince Grippi.

— The Pac-12 remains fourth in ESPN.com’s conference standings.

— Here’s the Eugene Register-Guard’s weekly Pac-12 notebook and conference ratings.

— There’s a lot out there on conference realignment, if no real additional hard news. Dennis Dodd of CBSSports.com says the whole thing is one big mess; while Greg Hansen of the Arizona Daily Star says it’s not necessarily new and Ted Miller wonders if stability is the end game.

All for now.
