Tuesday practice notes

The Huskies are off the field following their first full pads practice since the loss of Hau’oli Jamora to a season-ending injury.

And with this being the day that we get to talk to defensive players and coaches, that was an inevitable focus of the conversation.

Jamora attended the practice today, and defensive line coach Johnny Nansen said he has been in good spirits since the injury.

“Hau’oli’s been great ever since he got hurt and our (meeting) room’s been great, very supportive of what’s going on,” he said. “The young guys are looking up to the old guys. Having Everrette (Thompson) and (Alameda Ta’amu) to encourage them – hey we need the next guy to step, you can’t dwell on the Hau’oli getting hurt, we just have to bring the other guys along – I think they are starting to understand and get that message. You can expect Josh Shirley to play well. He practiced well today.” Shirley is expected to start in place of Jamora though the plan is also to rotate a little more up front, so Talia Crichton will also get some time there, with Thompson and Andrew Hudson on the other side.

“We need to play more guys, that’s the bottom line,” Nansen said. “Hud is coming along, Talia obviously he needs to play more. The bottom line is we can’t have Everrette and Meda taking every snap. Those guys don’t want to come out of the game but we have to keep them fresh in the fourth quarter or they are going to wear out. Hud has just got to expand his understanding of football and once he gets there I think he is going to be a pretty decent player for us.”

You can hear some more of what Nansen had to say in the video below.

As for practice, no big revelations. John Timu remained in red and didn’t do any team stuff. Greg Ducre was in red but did to a lot of team stuff and as UW coach Steve Sarkisian said yesterday, he is expected to return to full participation on Wednesday and be able to play Saturday. Jesse Callier was in red, possibly related to the hamstring injury he had last week, though we didn’t get a clarification of that.

With Timu out, Jamaal Kearse ran with the No. 1 unit at strongside linebacker. Ducre, meanwhile, is expected to split time with Quinton Richardson at one cornerback spot opposite Desmond Trufant, though Anthony Gobern also continues to get some work with the ones.
