Arizona fires Mike Stoops

What had been rumored in the last hour has become official as Arizona has announced that it has fired Mike Stoops as head coach, with defensive coordinator Tim Kish taking over for the rest of the season (here’s the letter Arizona AD Greg Byrne sent announcing the firing).

Arizona will play at UW on Oct. 29 at Husky Stadium.

It’s quite the quick fall for Stoops, who had Arizona ranked in the Top 10 last season — the Wildcats beat the Huskies 44-14 in Tucson last Oct. 23 to improve to 6-1 and then beat UCLA the following week. But since that win over UCLA last Oct. 30, Arizona has lost 10 straight games to FBS teams, and a 37-27 defeat at previously winless Oregon State Saturday apparently sealed Stoops’ fate.

Who will replace Stoops? There will be lots of rumors and Jon Wilner has already floated the name of Chris Petersen. Surely, that won’t be the last named bandied about for a job that isn’t at the top of the Pac-12 pecking order, but isn’t bad, either, especially with a stadium renovation planned.
