It’s an annual question asked this time of year — which team is UW’s biggest rival?
And maybe it’s an obvious one, as well. I was struck that former UW defensive tackle Steve Emtman adamantly said in a live chat with the Times today that Oregon is the team he “hates” the most, saying it would be the Ducks “one, two and three” instead of either WSU or Miami (the team the Huskies had to share the 1991 National Title with, much to their eternal disgust).
As Emtman noted, that feeling doesn’t really come from the days when he played. Back then, Oregon wasn’t the factor it is now and the Huskies beat the Ducks all three years Emtman played (1989-91) and pretty handily the last two. I’d imagine USC, UCLA and maybe WSU were the real biggest rivals at that time for the Husky players.
But obviously, things change, and as the fates of the programs at UW and Oregon have changed the last two decades, so has the nature of the rivalry.
Ken Goe of The Oregonian has a nice story tonight on the rivalry and how it has evolved through the years.
The Oregonian also ran its own poll earlier this week asking Oregon fans which team is its biggest rival — UW or Oregon State? As you can see, Washington’s winning roughly 55-45.
Now it’s your turn to counter. Is Oregon really the team you’d most like to beat as a UW fan? Or is it someone else?
