My Top 25

The weekly rankings no longer involve any thought of the Huskies, but I’ll keep passing my AP Top 25 ballot along in this space.

Lots of changes everywhere after a weekend of almost unprecedented carnage in college football. Not sure I see a way now to avoid an LSU-Alabama rematch (and yes, if those two deserve it, then rematch we must. But I think much of the country would agree with “avoid.”)

The Pac-12 has gotten involved in the wreckage the past two weeks, its three best teams taking turns beating each other on the road. How late we are in the season now makes it impossible to strictly go with the idea that because one team beat another, it inevitably has to be ranked ahead of that team.

But I did take that into heavy considering when I decided where to put USC. After watching that game last night — we were able to view a lot of it in the press box at Reser — it just didn’t make sense to put the Trojans below the Ducks. So there USC is at No. 8, looking like maybe the most improved team in the country since the beginning of the season.

The other prevailing thought of the weekend is the incredible importance of place kicking. Oregon and Oklahoma State this weekend and Boise State last weekend all left ruing critical missed kicks that otherwise might have them right smack in the national title race today (though boy, I’m also still left thinking Oregon should have used its time outs earlier and been more aggressive about just trying to score a TD and win the game at the end).

Here’s my entire poll:

1, LSU
2, Alabama
3, Arkansas
4, Stanford
5, Virginia Tech
6, Oklahoma State
7, Boise State
8, USC
9, Houston
10, Oregon
11, Oklahoma
12, South Carolina
13, Georgia
14, Kansas State
15, Michigan State
16, Penn State
17, Wisconsin
18, TCU
19, Clemson
20, Michigan
21, Notre Dame
22, Baylor
23, Auburn
24, Nebraska
25, Virginia
