Cozzetto in the mix at Arizona State?

Could Arizona State’s search for a new head coach reach into the coaching staff at Washington?

It could according to a few Tweets tonight.

A Tweet from Dennis Dodd of CBSSports.com said that UW offensive line coach and run game coordinator Dan Cozzetto is now in the mix to become the head coach at Arizona State.

A follow-up Tweet from FootballScoop.com said that “he’s got half the former players supporting him.”

Cozzetto has been at UW since 2009 (and was also at UW in 2003).

But he spent a significant part of his career at Arizona State during some of the school’s glory years. He was offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at ASU from 1992-99 under Bruce Snyder, a period that included the team’s 1996 run to the Rose Bowl. He was also tight ends coach in 2007-08 under Dennis Erickson before leaving that position to come to UW in 2009. Like the rest of UW’s assistants, he’s under contract through the 2012 season. But that’s pretty much a non-factor for an assistant when it comes to potentialy becoming a head coach.

Cozzetto was born on May 26, 1955 in Spokane and attended Gonzaga Prep and the University of Idaho, and then spent 11 seasons as an assistant at Idaho under the likes of Erickson and Keith Gilbertson before joining Snyder’s staff at Cal in 1990 and then moving with Snyder to ASU.

Cozzetto had also been named as a possibility in this column a few days ago. But ASU had been thought zeroing in on June Jones as its head coach before that fell through earlier today.

The Arizona Republic tonight also listed a few other candidates (while not mentioning Cozzetto) including Oregon offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich and Tennessee defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox, a former player at Oregon.

Cozzetto was hired as part of Sarkisian’s staff in Feb., 2009 after Jim Michalczik served briefly in the same position before leaving for a spot on the staff of the Oakland Raiders.

The other Pac-12 opening — UCLA — also continues to have a candidate with local ties in former UW player and Seahawks coach Jim L. Mora. But the LA Times reports tonight that there is no significant movement in UCLA’s search.
