Sunday notes and links

I’m heading up to what is the last UW practice of the year we will get to see.

Tomorrow’s is closed, as are all the ones in San Antonio. The Huskies will usually practice at a local high school and apparently just found it easier for logistical reasons to close it to everyone than try to let some people in selectively. Today’s workout is like a usual Thurday. The team’s practice tomorrow will be like a usual Friday. Then it’s three days off before leaving for San Antonio on Dec. 23 and resuming another gameweek set of practices there.

For now, a few notes and links. …

— ESPN,com’s Greg Biggins was among those who reported yesterday via Twitter that cornerback Bryan Harper of Colony, Calif., has decommitted from UW. He was instead visiting UCLA over the weekend. No specific reasons were given, but Harper was among those whose lead recruiter had been assistant Demetrice Martin, who is now at UCLA (here’s the report from when Harper committed last July). His decommit leaves UW with 20 known commitments, just one from a cornerback — Darien Washington. Goes without saying solidifying commitments from a few cornerbacks, such as Brandon Beaver of Dominguez High, is vital in closing out this class.

— For my story for today’s paper, I wrote about the legacy of receivers Jermaine Kearse and Devin Aguilar, who each are among the top seven receivers in UW history in terms of receptions (a chart is included with the story). UW has some depth at receiver and some exciting new players at that spot. Still, Kearse and Aguilar have been real bedrocks the last four years and the position will look a little different next season.

— Here’s a story reporting bowl fever is hotter than ever at Baylor.

— The LA Times reports on Jim Mora’s early recruiting efforts at UCLA.

— Oregon State defensive coordinator Mark Banker is interviewing for the head coaching job at Hawaii.

— USC defensive end Nick Perry is leaving for the NFL, joining left tackle Matt Kalil (though still no word on Matt Barkley).

— Interesting stuff here on how Arizona’s coaching search unfolded.

— An Arizona columnist also takes a somewhat lighthearted look at Arizona State’s meandering search.

— And some stuff on how ASU’s recruiting efforts look now with a new coach in tow.

Bruce Feldman with some interesting thoughts on UCLA.

Matt Hasselbeck will start for Tennessee today despite a calf injury, leaving Jake Locker in a backup role.

— Lots of links around the conference from Vince Grippi.

More after practice.
