Details on Martin’s UW contract

This may seem like old news now, but I had to wait a few days to get confirmed a few aspects of Demetrice Martin’s UW contract.

I’d asked because the word was that UCLA likely gave Martin a hefty raise to leave UW, as he did last week when he was named passing game coordinator/defensive backs coach for the Bruins under new coach Jim Mora.

Martin, like all UW assistants, has his contract reworked after the 2010 season, all of them being extended through the 2012 season (technically, June 30, 2013 the way the deals work).

Martin also received a raise, from a guaranteed $120,000 a year to a guaranteed $165,000 a year. All also had their incentives bumped up a little, and in Martin’s case he was due to receive an $8,000 bonus for the team playing in the Alamo Bowl (which I assume is standard for all of the Husky assistants). He was to receive that after the game, but he obviously won’t get that now.

He also had a buyout clause in his contract (again, standard in all the deals) in which he had to pay back 15 percent of the guaranteed compensation for one year for leaving before the end of the deal (so in this case, $24,750).

UCLA has long been regarded as being on the thrifty side in paying its coaches. But like the rest of the Pac-12 schools, it has a lot more money now due to the new TV deal. And word is UCLA is finally loosening up the checkbook a little bit.

Mora got a five-year deal for $12 million guaranteed, almost double what Rick Neuheisel was getting. Neuheisel was getting $1.25 million guaranteed a year.
