A few of you out there have e-mailed — or Tweeted at me — about what you have sensed as a rather blase attitude among Husky fans toward the Alamo Bowl, asking if I sense it, as well.
As I often respond when asked questions about how fans are feeling about something, it may be best to just ask the fans themselves.
So that’s what I’ve attempted to do here tonight, asking the simple question in this space of whether you are as excited about the upcoming Alamo Bowl as you were the Holiday Bowl last season.
One person suggested that the hype doesn’t seem the same as a year ago. I’d disagree with that. With Baylor featuring the Heisman Trophy winner in quarterback Robert Griffin III, this will be as hyped as any Alamo Bowl could possibly be, at least from a national media standpoint.
Obviously, that’s hype that largely dismisses UW’s involvement in the game. UW fans may take some umbrage at that, but that attention focused on Baylor is only natural. The Huskies got a lot more of the attention a year ago due to the presence of Jake Locker and the storyline of returning to a bowl for the first time in seven years and attempting to get revenge for a huge regular-season defeat against the same team.
The storylines this year more naturally revolve around Baylor, with the game being in Texas — about three hours from where Baylor is located in Waco — and because of Griffin.
As for UW fans, maybe there’s a sense that the season ended in somewhat disappointing fashion after the 5-1 and 6-2 starts — though unless UW had won the Pac-12 title, the Alamo Bowl was likely the best it was ever going to do in terms of a post-season destination.
But maybe after last season the novelty of simply making it back to a bowl game again has worn off and UW fans want more. Maybe that’s what is leading to a lack of excitement for this game — if indeed that is the prevailing sentiment out there.
So rather than speak for the fans, I’ll let you guys speak for yourselves. You can vote in the poll below and explain your feelings in the comments section that follows.
