Saturday morning notes — Owens decides instead on Bruins

We’ll start what’s a limited morning for news with the word that came down late Friday night that RB Tairen Owens of Muir High in Pasadena, Calif., will instead sign with UCLA.

Brandon Huffman of Scout.com has this story on Owens’ change of heart, which is no doubt due largely to the departure of CB coach Demetrice Martin — like Owens, Martin is a graduate of Muir High and has been the coach responsible for recruiting Owens to UW.

Owens had been UW’s first known commit for this class, which marks the second straight year a running back from California who was Washington’s first commit ended up going elsewhere — last year it was Brendan Bigelow of Fresno who ended up signing with Cal, instead.

UW now has just one known commit from a running back in Erich Wilson of Serra High in San Mateo, Calif. Wilson was recently named the San Mateo County Player of the Year.

Owens was generally regarded a three-star recruit, though some thought his senior year a little disappointing. Still, RB is something of a position of need for UW in this class with the loss of Chris Polk and some injury issues with some of the returners at that spot — Husky coach Steve Sarkisian has said just that on several occasions in the last few months — so it’ll obviously be worth watching if the Huskies can land another one somewhere else in the last few weeks of recruiting (recall UW tried to bolster the RB group in its 2011 class with the late signing of Kyle Wilson of Downey, Calif., but he didn’t get eligible).

The U.S. Army All-America Bowl is this morning at 10 a.m. on NBC. Scout.com has a wrapup of the players expected to commit and where they are expected to go. Other than Shaquille Thompson, who has essentially committed to Cal, none are considering UW.

However, UW commit Cyler Miles, a quarterback from Mullen High in Denver, is playing in the game as are a couple players the Huskies are pursuing, notably CB Brandon Beaver of Dominguez High in Compton, Calif., and Zach Banner. Here’s a West roster..

All for now.
