Still nothing official in terms of confirmations from schools on any of the various coaching fronts.
But as written earlier, it is expected that Doug Nussmeier will be leaving UW for Alabama, and several Alabama media outlets are now reporting the same, including this from the Gadsden Times. FootballScoop.com, which reported that Alabama could interview other candidates, said later Sunday night that it also expected Nussmeier to get the job.
So as we wrote earlier, UW will have a turnover of five of nine full-time assistants and UW coach Steve Sarkisian will now be on the prowl for an offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach as well as a defensive line coach.
A couple of early names thrown out as possible replacements that make some sense include John Morton, now the WR coach with the 49ers but a former assistant at USC and the Raiders when Sarkisian worked at each spot (he was initially rumored to be UW’s OC when Sarkisian got the job but decided to stay at USC when he was promoted to OC); and Andy Ludwig of San Diego State but who has also held jobs at Oregon, Cal and Utah.
— As I write this, no definitive news on recruiting from the weekend. Scout.com reported that there ultimately were nine on official visits, including three who have already committed — WR Michael Rector of Bellarmine Prep, LB Blake Rodgers of Los Flores, Calif., and CB Darien Washington of Orange, Calif. Another was OL Michael Kneip of Bellevue, who as reported earlier has committed to enroll as an invited walk-on.
The five taking visits who have not committed include three from Long Beach (Calif.) Poly — cornerback Randall Goforth, LB Salamo Fiso and DE Alonzo Williams — as well as CB Cleveland Wallace of San Jose and S Demariay Drew of Livermore, Calif. Wallace had been a commit to Oregon State before opening things up when UW hired Keith Heyward away from OSU this week, while Goforth and Fiso were initially committed to Arizona State before opening things up following the firing of Dennis Erickson. With Monday being a holiday, some of the players are still on their visits (attending the basketball game tonight)
At the moment, no commits from any of the visitors (other than Kneip) and with many still having other visits to take, it’s uncertain how quickly any will make decisions.
