Armstead picks Oregon

Well, I’ll keep this short now since Husky fans will no doubt want to move on — Arik Armstead, Arik Armstead, the heavily-recruited DL from Elk Grove, Calif., just announced he will sign with Oregon.

So despite a really heavy push by the Huskies and new assistant Tosh Lupoi — who had recruited Armstead while at Cal — that got UW on the podium, so to speak, UW came up short on maybe the best defensive line prospect on the West Coast this year.

In better news for UW, Joe Davidson of the Sacramento Bee reported that Shaq Thompson took an unofficial visit to Washington this weekend — he’d already taken an official to UW last September and had used all five of his officials. That obviously indicates real serious interest by Thompson in UW. Davidson said Thompson has no favorites at the moment. Some have surmised that Armstead and Thompson may be a package deal, but others say that’s overblown. Sounds like Thompson plans to wait to signing day to decide.

The Huskies are still in the hunt for a number of other top uncommitted players on the West Coast. Next — as far as has been announced, anyway — to make a public decision is Lakes High OL Zach Banner at a ceremony at his school Monday at 2:30 p.m.
