Setting up signing day

As I type this, it was about 24 hours ago that word came down about Shaq Thompson, igniting a flurry of recruiting activity for the Huskies. In fact, it may be hard to find a better 24-hour period of recruiting than the one that just lapsed as UW landed one five-star, two four-star and one three-star recruit, beating rival conference schools for each one.

It’s a surge that has UW all the way to 19th nationally in the Scout.com ratings and 21st in Rivals.com, after being in the mid-40s on Monday afternoon, the kind of one-day leap I’m not sure I’ve ever seen before.

I tried to wrap up what happened, and what may happen tomorrow, in this story for the Wednesday paper.

Speaking of tomorrow, it will start bright and early with the players allowed to begin sending in letters at 7 a.m. There will be no shortage of places to follow along and I hope you’ll include this space along the way. I’ll set up a running blog early in the morning and pass along the news as it happens.

Signing marks the first time the school can acknowledge commits, so GoHuskies.com will have plenty of coverage, as well, on its Signing Day Central page.

The recruiting sites have UW with 23 commits, but it won’t be a surprise if the Huskies lose at least one (lots of rumors about Michael Rector) and gain three or four more.

UW is in the hunt for at least three players who have scheduled announcements:

— Defensive end Dylan Cozens of Scottsdale, Ariz., is expected to announce at 9 a.m., also considering Arizona and Boise State;

— And cornerback Brandon Beaver of Dominguez High in Compton, Calif. (also considering Cal and Utah) and cornerback Randall Goforth of Long Beach (Calif.) Poly (UCLA and ASU) are each expected to announce between 3-5 p.m. on FSN Prime Ticket.

UW is also thought potentially still in the running for DE Pio Vatuvei and maybe CB Cleveland Wallace (who is listed as firm to Oregon State though rumblings persist he may not be 100 percent solid). Also been some rumors about UW being in the mix for CB Ronald Fields of College of San Mateo and who played at Grant High in Sacramento (same as James Sample and Shaq Thompson).

One player UW won’t be getting is RB/WR Kenneth Walker of Richmond, Calif., another former Cal commit who reopened matters and visited Washington last weekend. Greg Biggins reported tonight he will instead sign with UCLA.

And of course there is always the possibility of surprises.

— Also, here’s a little video report from Hawaii on Shane Brostek’s commitment.

— And here’s video of Jordan Payton making his announcement today.
